Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand experiences of communal living arrangements for older adults who live alone in rural areas based on the concept of ``aging in community.`` It is the exploratory and theory-based qualitative research utilizing the sensitizing concept. Participant observations in communal living areas as well as in-depth interviews with 47 participants were collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Four main themes were emerged as follows£º1) aging together rather than aging solo with long-standing neighbors, 2) being isolated from the community and bored on their own in communal place, 3) working for one`s own village in which one who is taking the initiative and ones who follow, 4) having the community transformed since the formal and informal caring had been interwoven together. Based on research findings, the practical implications are suggested for enabling the rural elderly to age in community.
